Rubrich Reading Lesson Overview

Reading Lesson Overview
For my reading lessons I have decided to focus on comprehension. I am going to work with two first graders, Mike and Kim. Mike is a struggling reader. From the times that I have heard him read he is very robotic and tends to guess what words are. He is currently seeking extra reading help, and I was told they are really working on his comprehension. I figured Mike would be a great candidate for this lesson. Kim on the other had is an average reader for her grade. She knows her sight words and her fluency is decent. While reading I have noticed that she depends on the pictures to help her comprehend. I want to cover up the pictures and have Kim visualize the text. I will see if she is still able to understand it without having pictures to reference to.  She also tends to forget some of the main point in a book.  So with these two lesson plans I hope to teach her new ways to comprehend. When I talked to my mentor teacher she said that they had never really worked on visualization or prediction. I thought this would be a great opportunity to teach them a new way to comprehend.
My first lesson will help them with comprehension. I want them to start visualizing what they are reading. They depend so much on the pictures to help them read and I want to see if they are able to comprehend when they are not there. I also want to see how much of the text they can remember without the pictures helping them.
For my second lesson we will work on predicting and will be creating a literature web. I got the idea for this lesson from the Stahl reading.  The basic plot points of a short story will be on index cards and I will have the students try to order them before I read and after. Seeing the main points before I read will give them an idea of what the book is about and help them comprehend. Reorganizing the point after I read will help me assess what they remembered.
