Vocab Lesson

Tier 1: hour house mother building chickensTier 2: processing current snobbism casually discouragesTier 3: economy marred unionI think the most important tier to learn is tier two. This tier is still somewhat unfamiliar to the students and needs further explanation. Tomkins talks about how tier two words are important to learn because they can be found across different curriculum's.  Not only does learning these words help them with the current book they are reading but other books as well. Although it is important to explain tier three words when you are learning about that topic.
Possible Sentences:For this I would give the kids a list of about ten words that they will be coming across in the next chapter. I would have them try to put these words into a sentence to see if they have any prior knowledge using these words. Afterwards they are to find the words in the dictionary and read about the different words. For this part they can work in small groups of two or three people. They can work together and discuss their findings. Finally they will read the chapter of the book that contains the new vocabulary words. They can look at how the book uses the words and compare them to what they have written originally.  After they finish the chapter they can go back and change their sentence so it makes sense. Make sure the students are aware that they cannot  use the same sentence the book does.

  1. I think the lesson provides students a chance to retrieve information from their prior knowledge, and then building on to it by looking at the dictionary and reading texts that have those words to help them understand how they are used. Going straight to the dictionary for help may be boring though, so the students could go straight to reading the texts and make inferences about what the words might mean. Then, they could double check if the definition that they came up with were accurate or close. This could even turn into a game or competition for students, which can be motivating too.

  2. I really like the idea for this lesson because the activity is clearly connected to the text and is using practical words they can read in the context of the book which helps understand the meaning/ definition of the word. Reading words in the context of the book helps solidify the meaning and backs it with an example used in the text. I also liked how you included a part to assess prior knowledge and then build from that. The students need to understand that some words will be new and unfamiliar but that there are many kinds of strategies and techniques to help figure out the meaning of the words. The last or checking method I would use would be a dictionary to conclude the lesson making sure the students fully understand the correct meaning or knowing that there are many types of meaning for that one word.
